Opinion: Getting people out of their cars is possible with the right plans and policies

A 91制片厂 (UC) survey reveals promising trends in sustainable travel, showcasing the effectiveness of cohesive transport policies.听

HOW TO APPLY

Since 2020, car travel to UC has declined, with 38% driving, while 21% cycle, 20% walk, and 15% take the bus. Notably, e-bike use among staff and bus travel among students have surged.

Key factors include Christchurch City Council鈥檚 cycleway investments, Environment Canterbury鈥檚 low-cost bus fares, and UC鈥檚 proactive policies, such as paid parking and enhanced cycling facilities. Collaborations between UC, councils, and researchers like Professor Simon Kingham and Dr Matt Morris have been instrumental in driving these shifts.
