UC's distance study programmes make university study possible for students who cannot access a local campus. Our distance learning students can study a range of programmes part-time or full-time while they work, care for family, or pursue other interests. Our distance study programmes make university study possible for students who cannot access a local campus. Students can study the programmes listed below听part-time or full-time while they work, care for family, or pursue other interests.听

Many distance students want to update their professional knowledge or advance their career with postgraduate study. Whatever your motivation, we can provide a great learning experience and to help you attain your goals.

Your space, your time

If you would like to study our intial teacher education qualifications by distance听you will need to reside in Aotearoa New Zealand.听You will need to attend on-site intensives in 艑tautahi Christchurch, one of which is an on-site intensive at the beginning of the programme, as well as attend professional practice placements in schools in Aotearoa New Zealand. If you are enrolled at the Whakat奴 Nelson campus you will complete a blended model of online and face-to face courses.听

Programmes you can study via distance

Our Early Childhood qualifications can be studied via distance.听

Your commitment

Fulltime students will need to be able to commit to:

  • About 40 hours a week of independent study.
  • Attendance at two On-site Intensives (OSI) each year, in-person, on campus in Christchurch
    • First week of Semester One
    • First week of Semester Two
  • Professional Practice in an early childhood centre or setting听
    • Year 1: five individual days placed in an early childhood centre in May/June; plus a 3-week block placement in July/August
    • Year 2: two 4-week block placements in May/June and October/November
    • Year 3: two 6-week placements in March/May (allow for Easter break) and August/September
    • Students are required to attend these placements fulltime.
  • Part-time students will attend an OSI for each year of study. See our course groups page for more information. Please note if you choose a part-time pathway you will be required to attend听 placements fulltime.

Our Primary teacher education programmes can be studied by distance.听

Your commitment

Fulltime students will need to be able to commit to:

  • About 40 hours a week of independent study (part-time students about 20 hours a week, depending on courses taken).
  • Attendance at two On-site Intensives (OSI) each year, in-person, on campus in Christchurch
    • First week of Semester One
    • First week of Semester Two
  • Professional Practice in a primary school听
    • Year 1: five individual days placed in a primary school in May/June; plus a 3-week block placement in July/August
    • Year 2: two 4-week block placements in May/June and October/November
    • Year 3: two 6-week placements in March/May (allow for Easter break) and August/September
    • Students are required to attend these placements fulltime.
    • There are areas in New Zealand where placements are extremely difficult to arrange, particulary where there are other tertiary providers (eg, Otago, Waikato, Victoria). If a placement is unable to be arranged in your area, you will be required to complete your placement in Christchurch.听
    • Part-time students will attend an OSI for each year of study. See our course groups page for more information. Please note if you choose a part-time pathway you will be required to attend听 placements fulltime.

  • He ako 膩-rorohiko, 膩-kanohi kitea hoki te momo ako, n膩 reira, ka taea te ako mai tawhiti. Heoi an艒 me matua tae 膩-tinana m艒 膿tahi w膩hanga o ia tau, he noho marae ki te hau k膩inga o K膩i Tahu ia tau.

    This is a mixed method style of delivery with content being available online, therefore there is the ability to learn from anywhere. Kanohi ki te kanohi (face to face) delivery will also be included in the programme through scheduled block w膩nanga each year and one noho marae each year.
  • Ko ng膩 wheako mahi ngaio, ar膩 ng膩 k艒hi 'Mana Ako', kei r艒 whare k艒hungahunga me ng膩 kura tuatahi M膩ori he w膩hanga matua kia m膩rama p奴 ki ng膩 膩huatanga o te taiao ako me ng膩 mahi o te kaiako.

    Professional Practice Exploration experiences may occur in whare k艒hungahunga (early childhood centres), bilingual primary, and kura kaupapa M膩ori settings throughout your degree.

The听Christchurch听campus is in Ilam听and offers teacher education courses at all levels. We offer our听Ako: Bachelor of Teaching and Learning (Primary)听听in听Nelson.
