Introduction

The Graduate Diploma in M膩ori Language and Pedagogies: Aumiri Pounamu (GradDipMLP) provides provisionally certified and practising kaiako teachers with the confidence to be educators of te ao M膩ori.

Our programme will help guide you to embed M膩ori knowledge and culture into your teaching at early, primary, and secondary schools. This includes te reo, tikanga M膩ori traditional culture, Aotearoa New Zealand history, and m膩tauranga M膩ori worldviews, such as sustainability and our role as kaitiaki protectors of the land.

This is an ideal programme for you to help support Aotearoa New Zealand's commitment to teaching our tamariki the values, culture, and history of our nation.

Entry requirements

Note: The GradDipMLP is currently not open to new enrolments.

The GradDipMLP is open to those who are provisionally certified as teachers, those that hold a subject to confirmation practising certificate, and full practising teachers.

You will need to have completed an Aotearoa New Zealand teacher education degree (or other qualifications of an equivalent standard) to enrol in this programme.

There will also be a hui with the Programme Coordinator as part of your application to assess your current level of te reo competency and ascertain the support you will need during study.

How do I plan my diploma?

The GradDipMLP requires 120 points of compulsory courses, which can be completed within 4 years of part-time study, starting in January. These courses are delivered in collaboration with .

There are flexible options to suit working kaiako teachers, including noho marae experiences, day w膩nanga, and night classes.

Students who are unable to complete all of the requirements on the Diploma can apply to the Dean of Education and Health Sciences to transfer their completed courses to the Graduate Certificate in M膩ori and Language Pedagogies: Aumiri Pounamu.

This Diploma is particularly suited as preparation for the Master of H艒aka Pounamu | M膩ori Bilingual and Immersion Teaching and Learning.
